Catheter
Bladder catheter:
  • It must be made of silicon to possibly prevent ascending infection.
  • The draining bag of urine must be armed with a one way safety valve.
  • It should b kept clean and removed as soon as the condition permits.
  • It should be changed every 6 weeks if it is left for a longer time.
  • The patient must then be examined for probable signs of infection to treat it accordingly.
  • The urine must be acidified to prevent incrustations and stone formation.
Suprapubic catheter:
  • It must be made of silicon to possibly prevent ascending infection.
  • The draining bag of urine must be armed with a one way safety valve.
  • It should be kept clean and removed as soon as the condition permits.
  • It should be changed every 6 weeks if it is left for a longer time.
  • The patient must then be examined for probable signs of infection to treat it accordingly.

  • The wound must be cleansed and dressed every other day to prevent granulation and infection.
Ureteric catheter:
  • It should be left in place as short as possible.
  • It should be changed under radiological control with a urologist.
  • The patient should be covered with antibiotics during manipulations in this area.
Renal catheter (nephrostomy):
  • It must be made of silicon to possibly prevent ascending infection.
  • The draining bag of urine must be armed with a one way safety valve.
  • The baloon should be inflated with not more than 1.5-2 ml of sterile saline.
  • It should b kept clean and removed as soon as the condition permits.
  • It should be changed every 6 weeks under radiological control by a urologist if is left for a longer time.
  • It should be open all the time.
  • The patient must be free of pain, fever, infection or any sign of inflammation.
  • The patient must then be examined for probable signs of infection to treat it accordingly.
