This is a collection of clear body fluid under the surrounding cover of the testis. It happens spontaneously, mostly due to friction between the two surfaces of this cover. This happens due to trauma, due to tight clothes or friction due to driving bicycles. This collection happens as a single room or it may be divided by partitions, which is due infection.
It results in a feeling of lump, pain or may become infected. The only treatment is to evacuate it and to excise the membrane covering the testis to prevent its recurrence. There is a special type of hydrocele which appears as a cyst to the upper pole of the testis. This should be treated the same as the classical one. -- --
 Hydrocele of the testis H = hydrocele / T = testis E = epididymis / Vd = spermatic cord --
Who qualifies for the operation?
Patients who suffer under the above mentioned symptoms must be subject to the operation. Small hydroceles which do not increase in size or cause symptoms should not be operated upon.
How does the operation work?
The patient lies on his back. The testes is laid free through an incision in the scrotum. The fine structures of the testis are identified and protected. The bag of the hydrocele is opened. The fluid is received in a basin and its volume is measured. A sample is taken for bacteriological and cytological examination. The bag is completely excised. Sutures are put to the edges of the bag to prevent bleeding. Coagulation is done to be sure that the wound is dry.
The testis is put back inside the scrotum and it is closed in layers. The skin is closed using fine hidden sutures. -- -- --
