The usual general anaesthesia in cases of ambulant surgery is the laryngeal mask anaesthesia. It is safe and permits a long time operation up to 4 hours. It is easy to administer and to be tolerated by the patient. It is always preceeded by light sedation and induction where a pain killing and sleep initiating drug is injected into the vein. The anaesthesia is then given as a gas through a tube connected to a mask covering the larynx. As a general anaesthetic it affects the general nervous system both the motional, intlectual and emotional functions. The patient should fasten for at least 6 hours before the anaesthesia. He is not allowed to take any activity of his own what so ever for 24 hours after recovery from the anaesthesia. That is why it is necessary to have a company after the surgery. All patients undergoing an operation for longer than an hour or those who will be operated in deep parts of the body regardless of the length of the operation. It is also recommended to anxious patients. It is the anaesthesia of choice for children regardless of the procedure done. How does the anaesthesia work? The patient will take a sedative to calm him an hour before taking him to the theater. He will have a vein catheter which permits the injection medicatins and the infusion of solutions. A sleep initiating drug and a pain killer will be injected into the vein. The mouth is then opend and the anaesthesia mask is inserted to cover the larynx. The edges of the mask are inflated with air to make it tight on the opening of the larynx. This optimaly helps the administration of the anaesthesia and prevents the possibility of back going of any food into the lungs in case of accidental vomiting. The tube of the mask is then connected to the anaesthesia apparatus which is adjusted to the suitable dosis of anaesthesia. Frequently asked questions (FAQ): --
