Regional anaesthesia or local anaesthesia is the method of choice to kill pain in a limited superficial area of operation. It is prefered in outpatient surgery and in genital organs. The technique of this type of pan killing is called field block as it is injected under the skin near the course of superficial nerves to stop pain conduction through them.
There are many drugs used for producing local anaesthesia. The most important group of it is the cain group like lidocain, scandicain. xylocain and others. They may be mixed with a drug to produce narrowing of the blood vessels of the area to delay the wash out of the anaesthesia and hence to prolonge its action. These mixtures are used in certain areas but not the tapering or prepheral end parts of the body. Inspite of being local, it is still considered an anaesthesia which affects not only pain but behaviour as well. That is why it is still advised to appear fasting for the operation even if it is done under local anaesthesia. You can not share in public trafic or take any decision at the day of the local anaesthesia. Please speak with our anaesthesia consultant for more informations.
Who qualifies for the local anaesthesia?
All cooperative adults undergoing minor and some superficial operationsof a time not exceeding two hours regardless of being outpatient or inpatient operation.
How does the anaesthesia work?
It is injected under the skin in long tracks under complete sterile condition. The injection is undertaken with a safety margin arround the field of the operation to insure complete killing of the pain during the operation and for sometime afterwards. Some other protective injections may be given prior to the injection of certain local anaesthetics to prevent eventual side effects on the heart.
