You have just had a surgery. The biochemical alterations in your body resulting from the surgical insult, anesthesia and medications need to adjust themselves from this offensive procedure to come back to its basic level. It is then advisable to have rest.
Please do not...
- have heavy meals like milk, milk products, fat or meat for the first 24 hours after the surgery.
--
- smoke and consume alcohol for the 24 hours after any surgery.
--
- consume alcohol or smoke for 14 days after the surgery if you have gone a plastic surgical procedure. This is important to promote skin healing. Alcohol and nicotine reduce the blood perfusion of the skin to 50% which delays wound healing. Do not take alcohol with medications.
--
- drive or take part in the traffic active life by any mean (motor vehicle, bicycles) or operate any machinery for 24 hours after the surgery.
--
- indulge in business or make any important decision for the first 24 hours after surgery.
--
- take any blood thinning compounds (aspirin and the alike) until 14 days after surgery.
--
- rush for prescribed pain medications except when really indicated and do not take medications unless they are prescribed by your surgeon or physician.

- start your diets with liquids and very light food when you feel hungry. It is better to start with lemon and orange soft drinks or ginger ale or light soup. Do not rush to have a large or unusual food. Please contact your nutrition counselor for the diet fitting to you.
--
- keep in mind that a light diet with high protein intake helps wound healing. Please supplement your diet with fluid
proteins and herbal combinations which stabilizes your immune system and guard you against infection. --
- sleep at least 8 hours at night and try to sleep on your back most of this time.
--
- restrain from penetrating sexual activity for 6 weeks if you have a penile surgery.
--
- the post operative medications are:
- Diclofenac (Diclofenac-Natrium) tablets 75mg, take one per day before sleep for a week.Vitamin C 500mg tablets, take one, 3 times a day for a month.
--
- Vitamin E tablets 800IU, take one per day.

--
- Others
Prophylactic antibiotics are important to avoid the risk of infection with resistant strains of bacteria on the long run (surgery of the penis):
- keep your wound clean and dry.
--
- contact your doctor immediately if you feel dizziness, nausea, unusual physical symptoms, numbness, redness, tenderness of the wound, open incision (part or all), swelling, discoloration, sudden loss of appetite or fever. Discuss any problem or question with your doctor.
--
- visit your surgeon the first day after the surgery to inspect the wound and examine you with ultrasonography if necessary.
--
- wound dressings should be done every day for 10 days. The wound dressing is done as follows:
- spray skin disinfectant Cutasept F (2-Propanol, Benzalkonium chloride) on the skin and leave 5 minutes to dry.
--
- Put a thin film of Nebacetin powderor ointment (Neomycin sulfate, Bacitracin) on the wound.
--
- Cover with a dry sterile wound dressing. The use of Tegaderm dressing is recommended on the second day of surgery because it allows you to have a shower without wetting the wound and enables inspection of the wound as well.
--
- During wound dressing, inspect to see if there is redness, oozing or clifting. This may or may not be accompanied with loss of appetite, nausea, headache and fever. This should be immediately reported to your surgeon, urologist or physician.
--
- After 10 days just treat the wound with a gel containing aloe vera ointment to loosen the connective tissue of the wound and avoid scar formation.
--
- Stay in a daily contact with an experienced doctor for the daily changes of bandages and judgment of the healing of the wound. You are not medically experienced to do this by yourself.
--
- There is no need for removal of stitches as I myself do not use external stitches. The only stitches I use are the fine intracutaneous monofil synthetic suture. This permits smooth wound healing, avoids scar formation, does not produce body reactions and avoids discomfort as it is self absorbable .
--
- If you have a penile lengthening procedure, then it is a must to stretch the penis using an adhesive tape or a device. It is applied as indicated for 2-4 hours daily over a period of 6 months. If in doubt just consult me to teach you how to perform it.
--
- Follow up is recommended after 3, 6 and 12 months of the surgery to evaluate the case and document the results.
