Infection

Infection is caused by microorganisms like bacteria or viruses. They are mostly infectious. They spread through direct or indirect contact. In this case hygine plays a major role.

The most common infections in urology are bladder and genital infections. Bladder infection is caused through self or foreign bacteria self bacteria come from the intestine as for example Eschereschia coli (E. coli) and the usual skin bacteria.

Bacteria can invade our body in wet places like sauna and swimming pool. Common cold weakens the body and its resistence and predispose for bacterial infection. Non hygienic sexual contact the major factor for infection with viruses and bacteria.

The most famous organisms here are the ginital warts, HIV infection and gonorhoea. The infection of the glans penis is frequent through wetness and collection of smegma and urine under the foreskin. Infection of the epidedymes can be caused by disturbance of the urinary stream.

The risk factors for the urinary infection are:

  1. non hygienic behaviour
  2. dirty toillets, sauna or swimming pool
  3. stranger sexual contact
  4. non sterile syringes
  5. narrow urinary tract
  6. cold weather

How can I protect myself from infection:

  1. Personal hygien starts with cleaning the body after using the toillets. Please wash your self as a woman from front to hind and not the reverse. You avoid in this way the contamination of the vagina and urethra with bowel bacteria.
  2. Men should clean themselves through pulling the foreskin behind and washing the glans penis with water and drying it after each use of the toillet.
  3. Please visit clean sauna and swimming pool only and use your personal towels and articles.
  4. Avoid the cold particularly for your feet and abdomen.
  5. Try to use a condom during sexual contact in situations which may necessitate this.
  6. Contact your urologist if you feel that your urine stream is weak.
  7. Drink more often during the day.
  8. Drink kamomile tea as it protect against common cold and infection.
  9. Consult your urologist when you feel the earlest symptoms of urinary infection. These are burning sensation during urination, increased urinary frequency, bain on urination or lower abdomenal bain.
  10. Visit your urologist immediately if you have a disease of the sexual organs.

The treatment of infection must be on the basis of antibiogram, that is to say testing the bacteria for the most effective antibiotic againist it. The other supplimentarymeasures will als help combating infection. The intake of fluids is of importance during infection as well.
